The Riley sheets, which we tested for the first time in 2019, felt fantastic out of the package but were actually much wrinklier and unpleasant after a single wash, and we almost passed on more testing because of it. Other percales we tried from brands like Snowe, Casper, and Boll & Branch felt softer and smoother out of the package or after a single wash and then began to lose some of that initial softness with repeated washing (we suspect that’s because any finishes added in production were rinsed away). However, as of April 2022 several colors and sizes are backordered, and we’re also looking into some customer service issues readers have had. Unlike the L.L.Bean sheets, the Riley sheet set comes in twin XL sizes for dorms. The colors and prints are also more modern. As of spring 2022, a standard queen set from Riley only comes with a fitted sheet and two pillowcases ($135), with an option to add a queen flat sheet ($85) if you want it, bringing the total price for a complete queen set to $220. If you prefer percale and don’t mind paying a little more, Riley’s Percale Sheet Set feels like a high-quality shirt and is a little more luxurious than the L.L.Bean sheets. They are warmer than percale sheets, though, so if you overheat, they may not be for you. They’re one of the few sets we’ve tried that are virtually wrinkle-free, making them lower maintenance than percale sheets. They’ve also been our top pick since 2014 (formerly under the Royal Velvet and JCP brand names), and in our tests they’ve consistently outperformed pricier sets in softness, construction, and durability.
For the price, we don’t think you can do better than the sateen Wrinkle Guard 400 Thread Count Sheet Set. Sateen sheets are more silky than percale, with a heavier drape. They’re beautifully made, get softer with every wash, and come with a generous one-year return policy.

We’ve been recommending them since 2014, and while they aren’t the smoothest percale-our upgrade pick from Riley feels a bit silkier-they’re crisp and softer than most percales we’ve slept on. They’re soft and breathable, yet more durable than others we’ve tested. Percale sheets tend to be cool and crisp, and of the dozens of sets we’ve tried, L.L.Bean’s 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale Sheet Set are our favorite.
